What are you doing for Halloween/Samhain?
« on: September 17, 2008, 06:40:30 AM »

Halloween/Samhain/All Hallow's Eve/Fred's Cheddar Night is my favorite holiday of the year. I'd be interested in hearing from others who love it. What do you dig about it? Any interesting stories or memories? Are you a pagan or wiccan for whom it is a spiritual thang? Ever gone trick or treatin' dressed as a Chinaman?

Me too. I'm running a race that morning then I'm going to dress up as Sarah Palin.

Awww GEEZE -- that time of year AGAIN?

I think I'm the Halloween GRINCH.  It's not that I really have anything against it in theory. I'm amused by costumes and non-destructive pranks. Indian summer is also - hands down - my favorite "season" short as it is.

But here is how, over the past few years- it seems to work out for me:

1 - I have contract work or school work piled on my desk.

2 - The dog - whose JOB is to let me know when something is unusual - is having a stroke because of the strange sounds, smells, unusual activity, kids tromping though our apartment house hall, and horror of  horrors - MASKS.

3 - Half the little ones who come to the door end up doing the "ding-dong-ditch" thing - NOT because they don't want treats, but because Fred sounds like the "Hound from Hell" from behind the door. - and given his size even his poodleness isn't enough to make him seem less threatening to young ones who don't know him.

So - my plan is what it has been for a few years now:  Put a bowl of treats on a TV table outside my door and a cute sign that says "help yourself" - take the dog in his service vest - and work in the Library Learning Commons 'til midnight - when it's safe to go home!

Ain't nobody died yet.  haven't even lost a tacky plastic bowl - let alone my TV tray.  But then, there's always the first time!  LOL!

Full Disclosure: I DON'T USE CANDY for this trick.  I definitely offer treats - just not candy.  Last year it was little bottles of bubble-blowing stuff - the year before that, little mini-packs of Play-Dough, 3 colors in a pack - year before that - kazoos . .  you get the idea.  Things they LIKE but not things they get so giddy over they'd commit mayhem.  Gotta walk the line between avoiding a door covered with silly-string and inciting to riot.  So far, so good.

If you ever try it - NEVER EVER use chocolate!  (or toothpaste  ;D )

Well - I have so much to do (Yes, working on this high holiday, OH DEAR!) that I am staying home this year and - i have a new(ish) experiment going.  The usual TV tray with a bowl of "treats" (this year all sorts of plastic creepy-crawlies) is in the hall.  On the door is a sign with clipart of similar crawlies - and the words:
HARK!

Please don't knock or
the DOG
will BARK!

Instead - help yourself to the critters here --->

Wish me well - it may be hell.

My neighbor is working (away from home - as she is a librarian) tonight - and decided to take a page from my book.  SHE has gourmet chocolate to offer!  Can you say "Duck and Cover?"
