Post counts are a part of the forum software that I have never liked. New users and their perceptions of things are the biggest reason why. It was a pain modifying the software to get rid of them.

Good show my boy! I agree 100%. When a new user logs on and comments for the first time and then gets attacked by another user who has been a member for a Long time and has hundreds of posts , it can be pretty intimidating.
Having moderated some Linux chat rooms back in the day, we were very empathetic to the new users perception of our community.
If you want new users to stay and to post often you kinda have to give them a few "mulligans" before you rip into them.
If new users feel that the "old gang" is teaming up on them and constantly beating down on them every time they post you will find that recruitment will stall.
Be friendly and supportive. It is not a competition of who is right and wrong. It is all about ideas, solving problems and having fun.
Now with that being said, did I tell you how much I dislike John B. Smells?
