hey what happened to the member number of posts?
« on: March 01, 2012, 02:31:23 PM »
Up until very recently, the total number of posts each member had accumulated was displayed under the avatar.  What happened?  How am I supposed to know who is either A) a respected longtime CoastGab poster, or B) some blowhard longwinded jackass with no life??

Fort Rock was accumulating too many. The more posts he had the lower our collective IQ and EQ sank.
The good part is that we can't be exceuted for our crimes now. Except in Arkansas.

The post count display must have been added only for a short time.
I remember in the past it was disabled in order to allow newer members to fit in better with veterans, nobody could gloat about their large post counts... :D

Are post counts even something to boast about?  :o

Post counts are a part of the forum software that I have never liked. New users and their perceptions of things are the biggest reason why. It was a pain modifying the software to get rid of them.

Good show my boy! I agree 100%. When a new user logs on and comments for the first time and then gets attacked by another user who has been a member for a Long time and has hundreds of posts , it can be pretty intimidating.

Having moderated some Linux chat rooms back in the day, we were very empathetic to the new users perception of our community.

If you want new users to stay and to post often you kinda have to give them a few "mulligans" before you rip into them.

If new users feel that the "old gang" is teaming up on them and constantly beating down on them every time they post you will find that recruitment will stall.

Be friendly and supportive. It is not a competition of who is right and wrong. It is all about ideas, solving problems and having fun.

Now with that being said, did I tell you how much I dislike John B. Smells?

Because I do  8)

couldn't agree more. i just want new users to understand that their opinions/thoughts/comments are no less valid than those of anyone else, and i don't want their interactions with veteran posters to be affected by any sort of benchmarks... either consciously or unconsciously.

Is there, like, a Peabody or something for forum moderators?

Not that I'm thinking anybody in particular deserves one.   8)

i got rid of the post count because i didn't want new members to think they had to defer to anyone.  i hate that shit.  the "activity" bar is as close as it's going to get.

Totally agree with you on the post count thing and hate forums with post counts, rankings, etc.

About the activity bar: may or may not be related, but I've noticed a number of complaints from posters about other posters who "post too much."  Gosh that makes me paranoid.  What's the measure of "posting too much" and will the activity bar reveal that?

Just asking.

Dear Lovely Bones.  Unfortunately, you have reached your quota for allowable postings within a secret window of time as determined by/known only to the Ascended Masters, the names of whom are scrawled under a seat in the Texas Theatre made famous on November 22, 1963.  The names were carved by the knife of none other than the second cousin twice removed of Madame Blavatsky.

(incidentally, the same theater where I first watched The Green Slime when it was released, so I know the names are there.)

Wait, the Ascended Masters have recounted.  There is a very large amount of "troll chits" just made available due to the recently forced departure of a Master Baiter.

Post at will.  But I'll be watching you, Lovely Bones.  I'll be watching you.

( cough cough clears throat )

I mean the Ascended Masters will be watching you!

Shit!

Well, I like to think of myself as both.

So you're kinda like the Wizard of Oz, huh?

Okay, I've posted beyond my limit for today, and I am fearful and quaking, oh Great Ascended Master.   8)
