Last night was actually OK. I could go back to tolerating Noory if he conducted himself every night as reasonably as he did with Harrington.  He (mostly) restrained himself from injecting his standard fodder for C2C's least common denominators. He let the guest venture to places where he usually fights to redirect...or just disappears the guest.  It helped that GN left his New Agey consciousness twaddle home last night.  Not bad George.  Really.

I recall that. The loon was more or less on a stream of consciousness bullshit bender, with one ridiculous tale segueing into another. When he got up to the part about confronting Ted Kennedy at a cocktail party, Art just couldn't let it go on any longer, and cut him right there.

I was up late last night due to the storms so I tuned into a station that carries Coast. Lo and Behold I hear Red Eye Radio instead of Simple George.  I haven't tuned into that station for a number of months so who knows when they dropped the show. All I know is that they had been carrying C2C since the beginning.

Listening to somewhere in time right now, from July 8, 2002, and a recent ex-con called in and said that Art would be surprised how many fans he has behind bars. Art said that he actually wouldn't - back when he accepted mail, he got quite a bit of mail from convicts. Now, Noory likes to brag about how many fans 'he' has in prison - I wonder if they are actually fans of him, or just of the show. Personally if I were in prison and had to switch from hearing Art Bell to George Noory every night, I would be extremely unhappy.

Very funny first two hours tonight. The guest was Guy Harrision, a skeptic (not a debunker) who wrote a book about the likelihood of various paranormal beliefs being true. Very reasonable and well-spoken guy, but Simple George got more and more irritated as the 'interview' went on when Harrison wouldn't agree with SG's beliefs. Noory almost lost his famed 'courtesy' after bringing up Edgar Mitchell's alleged claims that, despite not having seen anything himself, his conversations with others in the space program convinced him that we have 'been visited'. ( I'm not sure if Mitchell ever said that anywhere but in Noory's mind.) Harrison replied that astronauts are as possibly susceptible to misinformation and delusion as the rest of us.

Worth listening to, anyway. Simple George even took a shot at the guy during Open Lines.

I agree with you, Stevesh. Harrison has a great attitude and personality, and he's not antagonistic towards believers like some debunkers (not that he's one of them) tend to be. He reminds me of Shermer to a certain extent, although he seems more sympathetic towards alternative beliefs. A caller said that he should be the go-to skeptic on Coast, which was a great idea. The show needs another voice to provide a counterpoint to Noory's irrational and irritating magical thinking. All sane individuals know that there *are* coincidences, and the host's insistence otherwise demonstrates a disregard for unstable listeners. For example, a psychotic asks for a sign from God to see if he should do some dangerous thing, and he hears "go for it" when he turns on the radio. A sane individual would interpret that as a meaningless fluke, but a psychotic would share the host's view that there are no coincidences. That's not to say that there aren't miracles and synchronicities, but you can't view life through the lens of a permanent resident of the land of Fantasy. Noory often sounds like he sees the world through the eyes of a fantasy-prone second-grader. His philosophy is the obverse of Occam's Razor, as demonstrated by that little dig at the guest during open lines.

Last night's interview...

George was getting more and more frustrated and finally hit the last straw when the author had never heard of George's aunt who wrote that famous book -  That factoid really falls flat times like that.  If you have to explain it....  Anyway, shouldn't he be proud of his wonderful books?  Time to get off those coattails or apron strings.

C2C site reports that a new affiliate started carrying the show here in Abq on Friday night (March 2).  I thought, huh! Well, let's hear what's on... nuthin. As of this morning it was still a very, very low-powered station (maybe out of a small town north of Abq), broadcasting Disney shows for kids (thus even lower powered after dark). Almost... appropriate.

When Noory took over for Bell he thought the show was big because of the fact that they would let anybody on as a caller to express their opinion, he doesn't realize that it was because there was a huge divergence in opinions, and because they covered a huge number of different paranormal or supernatural topics. Now he still lets callers say what they want for the most part, but they only cover a few, select, mainly Christian themes. Most things that are no Christian based is no problem for Noory, he gets out the crowbar and wedges in Angels. They also have also moved more into the ultra-paranoid crash of society topics, which are also largely Christian based.

Now they let people call in, but no interesting people call because most of the people with a functioning brain can't stand the idiocy that has become C2C. Every few months when I tune in I hear somebody say they've been able to get through to the show twice in a week, or even twice in a show. This means nobody is calling the show anymore, and most likely few are listening. When Art hosted, and ratings were supposedly lower it was impossible to get through very often, people would say they called for weeks on end before getting through.

i can think of a great example of art's actions in this very situation.  do you remember when george green (i think that's his name) was on and art terminated the interview prematurely because of green's unbelievably unbelievable claims?  art ended the segment playing the doobie brothers' what a fool believes, began the next segment playing the same song, and then opened by telling green, live on air, that he's terminating the interview because he doesn't believe a word of it.  i know art did this on other occasions with other fraud guests, but this is the biggest example i'm able to recall.

I remember those days - they were the best.  I recall quite a few people who finally got through and said they had been trying to get through to talk to Art for years.   These days callers often get through twice on any given night.

George had yet another one of his quack medicine programs but this time with degree-in-the-mail and international best-selling writing schmuck "Dr." John Gray, who declared that 80% of the U.S. national budget is spent on health care.  He also claimed that twice as many women have college degrees as men (not even close).   Of course, George, who does no research for his idiot programs, didn't challenge any of the outlandish claims Gray made over the two painful hours this nitwit babbled.

The contract negotiations may be contingent, with a clause written in:  In the event that the Mayan calander ends on December 21, 2012, all contract extensions are null and void.  However if the host shall not be hit by a solar flair or other act of the Mayan Gods, the contract shall be extended until December 31, 2012, 11:59 p.m, Pacific Time in the City of Angels.  In the event an Astroid predicted by Mr. Noory on March 4, 2012 to hit the earth makes a deep impact and the tsunami from the hit rises and engulfs the Premiere Radio studios, he is just shit out of luck!  Then, this contract shall be waterlogged, unreadable, and all terms and conditions prior entered into are unenforceable.

Agreed.  And Noory seems to have toned down his pandering to the new age gem strokers. Toned down...not stopped.  I wonder if radio has a fixed "ratings month" as with TV.  Back in TV days, you could always count on the best shows/guests during the bi-annual ratings rush.

Well, in fairness to hating Noory, listening to shows with GOOD guests is even more cringeworthy than the typical self-help/paranormal fare, since Noory's terrible interviewing skills and intellectual deficiencies are always looming - always threatening to cut off the guest in the middle of a most interesting explanation; always ready to redirect the most fascinating forbidden topics with asinine questions.

That said, I think some posters here fail to separate the genuine, intelligent guests who happen to be talking about non-mainstream topics with the self-help/paranormal/economic hucksters, preferring instead to put them all in the same category of unscientific woo-woo nonsense.

If you listen carefully, you can see the lies that Noory has constructed for himself. Naturally, not wanting to admit that he is a terrible interviewer, we have statements where he soothingly tells himself that the show is not about him (or indeed, any form of normal conversation between human beings whatsoever), but is rather about the guests and hillbilly callers. That's why he happily chugs along, passively and always subtly disrespecting his callers as human beings, and pretty much only asking basic questions to his guests.

His stupidness is assuaged in a similar way. A lot of people in the New Age community mistake "intuition" for halfway stunted intellect, and Noory does the same.

There are truly great guests from time to time, like Dr. Neil deGrasse Tyson and Dr. Michio Kaku.  Sadly, more often than not we are treated to wing nuts like Alex Jones and other assorted carnival acts.
