Is George Noory Really WKRP's Less Nessman?
« on: February 03, 2012, 02:35:28 PM »
I've been listening to George mangle the English language as well as foreign words ("Rio De Janiero"; "Turin") and his -- well, how does one characterize it . . . signature -- style of delivering news, and it struck me that he's basically doing Les Nessman from the old WKRP in Cincinnati. Here's a link to a clip that is so George, it isnt even funny (though it's funny) . . . I wish the one with Chi Chi Rodriguez was available.

Noory would drop the routine flyball in the "battle of the stations" softball game.

I think you are being grossly unfair to WKRP by mentioning Noory in the same sentence. There was no equivalent to Noory at WKRP. Les was just dull. But he knew his stuff. Noory seems to struggle with everything. Including basic pronounciation and remedial knowledge.

That may be true, though I found the inability to get even the most straightforward of tasks -- such as reading from a piece of paper -- completed competently uncannily the same.

I should however apologize to WKRP.

Agree with posts above.  Except for "Chi Chi Rodriguez," Les wasn't Noory.  Baxter the Buffoon was closer.

And WKRP was, well, pure genius.  All these years later, I laugh when I think of Dr. Johnny Fever trying to escape the phone cops.

I was not really around for Baxter- but WKRP was in reruns for eternity when I was growing up and I still get the theme song stuck in my head every so often.  I read the title and thought there are some similarities.  Sure, the differences are striking (Les was always lovable if nothing else and I can't see him pushing Turmeric for cancer.)

Les always wanted his office.  George tells stories about a Hawaiian office.  Les would beat he chest to make "helicopter sounds" for the traffic- I'm positive that George will one day play Hawaiian music in the background and claim it is live.  (He will probably be playing Bruddah Iz, thus giving away the hoax.)  Les just wanted to be taken seriously and I think that being the "overnight guy" George likely suffers from many of the same problems.  The station manager will not give him a raise because he just produces what is seen as junk radio for the night loons and crack pots.

Les does not wrap up the side of George that would push crap science to make a buck and knowingly injure his listeners.  For the aspect of him that is a little creepy, a little sleazy and a little full of himself I think you need to combine the worst of Les with the worst of Herb.  Take out what makes them lovable characters and you have a winning combination.

If George had turkeys tossed from helicopters he would not be shouting "oh the humanity."  He would have a new age guest on to blame the birds because if they had wanted it bad enough, visualized flight, paid $50 each for a "flying spell" and an addition $30 to remove curses, made millions by working at home from their computer, followed a daily regimen of ingesting Turmeric and bought the P90X program, they could have soared.

I have actually heard That Idiot Noory pronounce 'Rodriguez' as  'Rod-Reeee-Quez'  just like Nessman.

And this is a person that lives in a state where half the place names are in Spanish.  Not to mention many of the residents have Spanish surnames.

"Those phone cops, they play hardball, man." I still use that. The episode where they dropped the turkeys from the helicopter - classic.
