A fat, patronising, allegedly gambling-addicted twat called Alec Salmond wants to remove Scotland from the United Kingdom, so he and his mates can afford the more expensive brand of fizzy wine.

...I think you can guess my opinion on the subject, but i'd like to hear others' opinions on this specifically, and also the general issue of small nations' whiny attention-seeking behaviour.

also, should the UK be allowed to wash it's hands of the economic disaster zone it's created north of the border over the last few hundred years?

I think if the people Scotland want to be independent of the UK more power to them. I wouldn't want to be saddled with that bloated, wheezing mess that passes for a government across the pond.

I understand, on both counts. However we Scots have a built-in knee-jerk reactionary prejudice against 'the english' (till we grow up a bit anyway) and I very much worry that this will be the basis on which the coming referendum is judged.
Also, I can't help wondering what we'll be replacing the UK government with - yet another bunch of suits and wallets with voices for hire?

Ignore me - I'm just sounding off here because if I speak my mind in public I'm liable to get my head kicked in by a bunch of so-called patriots.

The best I could come up with is that I went out and had a few drinks in your honour, and while I don't normally indulge, I also accepted a few lines from a friend. My they were fine. Of course tomorrow I can go about my business like a normal human being. I truly despise addicts.

I believe that Salmond is simply planting a flag atop an already sovereign entity built by a series of philosophically related decisions before him. Separation in principle opens the door for separation in fact. All that Scotland is lacking is a foreign relations office and full control of taxation.

I agree that it's possible to make it happen, I'm just not so sure we should make it happen. I worry about the motives of those who have most to gain from it more than the concept itself.

Well, if the UK government is similar to the US government, they will do more for you once you are an independent nation just to keep you in good graces.

As an Englishman, I personally couldn't care less what Scotland chose to do. Don't get me wrong, I would rather they not leave and break up the UK, but we'd be no better or worse off if they left.

I think with the way the world is at the moment economically, especially in Europe, they had better be very sure they really want it. It could go spectacularly tits up if they get it wrong.

Agreed, on both points. In fact it calls to mind the old joke about the government deciding to burn down Scotland for the insurance money.

Ironically, if they'd done it when they originally wanted to in the 70's, they'd have an economy now that would embarrass England according to the suppressed Commons report from the time.

You might find this an interesting read. It was never discussed in public because of the conclusions it drew.

last time around, even if the UK would have allowed it, I'm not sure the US would have. Scotland used to be a hotbed of socialism/commie-ism. That's pretty much dead these days.

Yeah, that sounds a bit alex jones, doesn't it? Which leads me to my next musing...

Are american states 'technically' allowed to leave the union? I don't particularly think that would be a good idea, I just think it would be fun to watch them try.

Well we actually fought the civil war over that very question. A good deal of people think that it. Was to free the slaves but unfortunately that was not the north's true motives. Anyway the result of the civil war was a stronger federal government and the ability for states to succeed from the union was nullified.

An interesting note is pre-civil war the USA was referred to as "these united states" after the civil war it was referred to as "the united states"

Much as I dislike being part of the western globalist power-grab agenda or whatever we call it these days, these people do rule the world, and I think scotland would be much better off staying sheltered under the Eagle's wing.
