I recall hearing a guest talk about history and counter-intuitive statistics a little while ago. Trying to find out his name and if he had a book or anything. I recall two thing he spoke about:

1) Anonymous voting actually reduces voter turnout
2) Birth control/Increased accessibility of Abortions in the 1960s led to an increase in children up for adoption.

I think you are looking for the author of Freakonomics, Steven D. Levitt.

And if you'd like his books (ebook format - epub and PDF), Freakonomics and Superfreakonomics, they are both available at the link below. Freakonomics is the revised and expanded version. I also have the "movie" Freakonomics from 2010 in 720p which is entertaining if you desire.
