Know about heavy metal music? HELP ME.

Avi:
It's always a problem to find an exact match to what is stipulated. The 'top bands,' because they've signed with major record labels, are going to be "blandified" and overly produced. Thus, the argument: well, so-and-so isn't really metal. There are metal bands actively touring and recording for a niche market - but that is way different than being a top-grossing act, certainly by industry standards. Too, many metal bands in the USA are contracting with producers in Europe, like this band, Chimaira, from Cleveland:

This discussion and these examples are exactly what I was looking for, thank you for participating.

Thats all some pretty heavy stuff with alot of "cookie monster" vocals. Yet some of those guys who play that stuff are the very nice & mild mannered souls.

Recovering Noorholic:

I listen to a crapload of Folk Metal ... though most of the bands I like I don't think are big, but defo Germany's Blind Guardian even though they're all ancient now (I don't listen to them much because the lyrics are a little too Dungeons & Dragons-ey which is too bad because their melodies are awesome) ... check them out at Wacken Open Air!

Blind Guardian Wacken - Nightfall Live

Also, Italy's ElvenKing!!!

The Wanderer-Elvenking

Definitely not big, but my fav folk metal band of all time is Sweden's Falconer!

Surprised that no one has mentioned Coheed & Cambria.  They're touring with Maiden.
