knye is sold..
« on: July 04, 2008, 03:10:45 PM »
By Jeffrey Yorke

For years, Art Bell ruled his world and the darkness of America's nights from ?The Kingdom of Nye? studios in Pahrump, Nev., a very fast hour's drive over the hill from Las Vegas. And his para-normal-themed radio show, Coast to Coast, was one of the most popular overnight programs and among the most lucrative ? WBAP-AM's overnight trucking show out of Dallas was also a cash cow. Bell, an R&R Talk Radio Seminar ?Lifetime Achievement Award? winner, retired from active nighttime duty in 2003, and then from weekend work last July 1 to spend more time with his new wife and newborn daughter.

While he occasionally does fill-in, he's now sold his station, KNYE at 95.1 FM, a classic hits/talk outlet, to staffer Karen Jackson for $600,000. Jackson was busy in production, cutting commercials ? already a good sign -- when R&R called her and could not comment on the deal. She owns no other stations.

Yeah, I don't see why he can't do something even sporadic as a podcast where he'd interview former guests for around an hour or so. That'd allow him a lot of flexibility with his family, and could still give something more to his fan-base, though that would take the open lines aspect out (which I think a lot of you like), but it could be implemented in other ways... maybe if he got a bit tech savvy and used Skype, hell, maybe record ham radio sessions. v_v

I hope I'm wrong - but he may just be moving on.  It's a new era for him - new wife, new child, and at an age where people often look for a new direction.  Maybe I'm just saying that not to get my own false hopes up.

Maybe we should all get licenses and start up the www.coastgab.com HAM operators club. Besides, it may be the only way to communicate after 2012.

Well, this partially answers a question I just posted in another topic. He could still do his program there even though it's sold, couldn't he?

And, Shazam, (sorry, that's what I always think when I look at your name), I got my license in part because of Art, so I think that's a great idea.

when i was 11, i studied this HUGE book preparing to get my 2-meter ham license.  i studied and studied for weeks.  i was a walking genius of radio theory at only 11.  then, for some odd reason, i never went to take the test.  i have no idea what sidetracked me.  to this day, i still have no ham license.

Me as well.  I was totally into ham when I was 16.  I was doing well on my morse codes practice tests and attending classes.  For some reason I never went to take the test.  What a shame

Same here as well.  When I was about 11, I was doing the same thing.  Had an operator neighbor teaching me the morse, and I was supposed to take the test one autumn, but something happened.  I think I discovered girls and went on to get "licensed" in other areas of "meat operation". OHHH!

Ahem...yes, well, it seems ham radio may be the only way I will ever have a chance to talk to the guy now. I got no e-mail response.  :-[  but at the rate I'm going it'll be a while until I even get on the air. I am particularly apprehesive about the whole antenna issue for some reason.

Art is the Best, don't be offended.  I take the issue seriously. Well, as seriously as I can take anything without getting homicidal.  What is your......

antenna issue?

*You will note that although this line of dialogue is ripe for double "entendre"(entente 4 the buffs) hilarity, I have let the question stand as is, in a show of good faith, for I do not wish to offend*

I think it's official by now.  There are others here, but we seem to be the type that really smile with delight over our fancy new badges.

Yes, people, I have antenna-phobia. Oh, man... I can see where this is going. I have an antenna, thankfully a dipole, which might cut down on some of the jokes (?! ;:)), but I have to string the thing up outside, and I really wanted to be more stealth about, but that seems to be my best option.

Max, I really have no idea how many watts I'm going to be running. Probably like 5. It's a 1 amp transceiver, but I have a 20 amp power supply so I can hook up a bunch of stuff. But this point, I just want to get sound out of the thing. If I have any luck, I'll let you guys know. But any advice would be great!

Shazam, none taken. Please don't get homicidal!
