I am mystified as well and want to throw open the door to speculation.  Are these new folks from the boondocks who have never heard a good host?  Are these people who listen to paranormal/conspiracy/end-of-world doom but don't want a guest to be challenged?

What? What?

I dunno either.  Maybe this is the wrong place to ask such a questions since it seems like most of us think GEORGE NOORY SUCKS.

I'd like to see a third party source of ratings such as Arbitron before I go believing what Noron has to say about it.

If he really does have good ratings, then that is yet another indication of how society & the general intelligence of modern society is going down the shitter.

Maybe Mencken had it right when he said, "no one ever went broke underestimating the intelligence of the American people". Expect to see Noory on the cover of Forbes soon.

Check out Billboard's top albums...nothing I like is on there, everything I despise dominates the charts.

I kinda like it that way...the day Richard Thompson has a top 50 album placing in the USA is surely to be followed by four horsemen.

Adele's album is nice and The Book of Mormon is pretty funny.  Back up off.  :P

(Had to check Billboard Top 10 Albums when you said that.)

I also dig Adele and her British blue-eyed soul sisters, Duffy and Joss Stone. I even like Amy Winehouse (fitting surname) when she's sober.

Despite great reviews and being on a major label(Capitol), "Rumor and Sigh" still failed o get into the Billboard albums chart(top 200)

His only two Top 100 placings on the Billboard albums charts were:
"you? me? us?  in 1996  reached 97
"Dream Attic" in 2010    reached 83

Hi, I've been reading Coastgab for several months, concurring with most of what has been said, never driven (shame on me) to contribute.  Well, this Noory ratings issue really got to me.

Noory is a FLAT OUT LIAR, we can't believe anything he says.  First, there's the minor issue of his hair color.  He lies and states he doesn't color it, even though there is PROOF in the form of old photos that he is almost gray, just like most men who are 60+.

Secondly, he LIES about ratings, etc.  Earlier this year, probably March 2011, he had on some guest who knew Glenn Beck.  (Doesn't matter if you love or hate Beck, please read on).  Noory told this guest to tell Beck that he (Noory) is bigger than Beck.  Strange, the guest had no comment.  Then at the end of the interview, Noory made it a point to again state that he was bigger than Beck.  I knew this to be wrong, but, I rarely listen to C2C, so I forgot out it.

Then, in April 2011, Noory stated that C2C is Number 2; he's just under Rush Limbaugh and he hopes to soon surpass him.  Again, whether you like or hate Rush, Beck, etc., Noory was again coming out with a FLAT OUT LIE.  I did a little research on Wikipedia on most listened to radio shows.  Rush was #1 with 15+ million listeners a week, Hannity #2 with 12+ million, Beck #3 with about 12 million.  Where's Noory feeble brain?  (I know, where the sun don't shine.)  His own website states that he has only 3 million a week, a fraction of the big three.  The list stated that the #10 show has 6 million, twice as many as C2C.

Talker's Magazine, an industry publication, puts out a yearly Heavy Hitters listing.  This is based not only upon ratings, but on influence.  Again, the big three were Rush, Hannity and Beck.  Noory was ranked #22, a long way from the #2 he falsely claimed.

On 4/17/11, I emailed Noory and Lisa; no, I knew I wouldn't get a reply, but I just wanted to inform them that this is one woman who is not fooled.  I gave them the above stats, asking them to substantiate the #2 claim.  No response.

Noory may he feel he's #2 based upon the number of affliliates, but big deal.  He could have 1000 stations, but with only 3 million listeners, C2C ads command only a fraction of the cost as it is  to advertise on Beck, Hannity, etc.

I guess Noory has absolutely no socially redeeming qualities.

1.  He is of marginal intelligence.  Definitely, under the average IQ of 100.  And as a former teacher,  I can tell you, not much cognitive ability with only a 90 IQ.

2.  He's a paranoid, fear driven; a grown man afraid of clowns, believes in EVERY conspiracy (they're out to get us).  He's afraid of regular tooth fillings, flouride in the water, flu shots; takes 40+ pills a day to fend off God knows what aliment he imagines in his paranoid brain.

3.  Most importantly, and this deals with his morality, he's a FLAT OUT LIAR as I've shown above.  His problem is that he's not smart enough to be a good liar.

Unfortunately, he appeals to that half of the populace with only a double digit IQ, and I guess statistically, 1/2 of the population has an IQ of under 100.

After all, do you carmelize the onions you are feeding livestock?

Well I was wondering if something was up. Every once in a while I hear callers consoling him and telling him what a good guy he is. As if he has let the word be spread that he is feeling underappreciated, this would account for that. Seems to me that's always been the case with him. I remember him once going on about how he wasn't a studied professional or something like that and he was just trying to be real. I took that as an apology for why he mispronounces so much and it was before I realized alot of what he says is just incorrect and he does have an agenda for the show. Not that he had his agenda figured out quite that early on.

I just think people are tired of Noory Infomercials and how he just seems to stick to the same topics.  I did notice a couple times recently he had a few shows where the topics didn't seem to be on his regular play list so maybe this time instead of just whining he's doing something about it.

As for numbers, I recently heard that any talk show that is on the Internet can tell how many people are listening. I assume it's not instantaneous but that they have something like Google Analytics. Other than that, and taking email out of the equation, I would think the only way any station knows it's being listened to at any given time is by callers. And maybe by a sponsor informing them that a customer said they listened to the station at such and such a time on such and such a date. You know, life pre-Internet.

He was ranked #24 in 2009, and here's the 2011 list where he is #22.

I was curious where he might have been ranked back around 2005 or so, but I haven't come across it yet.

Welcome to the forum, Tara. That's a good point on ad revenue, which is why we don't hear Ford ads on Coast. Another point is that a commercial can serve as a bellwether for the direction that a show will take. Hence the ads for food and gold, as well as the questionable spots by Michael Dimond. Then, there are the commercials for medicine and supplements, which probably indicate the anticipated interests of the audience. Such ads likely show that they assume that Coast now has an older demographic obsessed/concerned with the health problems that accompany aging. The hyperbole, in some of the other spots, also reflects the hysterical tone of some of the Armageddon programs. It's almost to the point where we soon may hear ads for End Times snake oil.

Sheila, do you think that some of the callers are ringers (no pun)? Some people claim that Coast uses paid callers. I have absolutely no legitimate way to confirm or deny that. However, I do think that it's probable that the flatterers go to the head of the call line. The praise, from both callers and guests, is obviously over the top. The compliments, from otherwise wonderful guests, sound extremely fake. Some of the callers, on the other hand, might just have incredibly low standards. I know that sounds mean, but there's no excuse for cheering the demise of a cherished institution.

Tara, you are right in absolutely everything you've said here IMHO.  Thanks for spelling it out for anyone (not likely here at Coastgab) who has not yet realized that when Noory's lips are moving, he's more than likely lying.  I figured that out quite a while ago, but it still amazes me how blatant he is with the easily controvertible bilge he puts out there as the truth.

Worse still is that he has a huge audience who believe everything the man says.  And he knows it!!!   >:(

basic media 101, any publicity is good publicity even if bad.   if you google for Noron or c2c, you get main site and eventually this one.  people who come here will probably go to the main one to see what's all this is about and listen to Noron.  it's a self-fulfilling prophecy.

i rarely listen anymore unless i'm going to post a bunch of riffs about the current show.

I've sworn off streamlink a few times, but then the good George has what sounds like a compelling show or maybe a potentially great guest is on the bad George show, and I get sucked back in.  Plus I like having access to the AB Somewhere in Time shows, and for $5 / month, it's not a big expense.  As far as being a fucktard, I guess if the show fits...

Speaking as someone who doesn't quite hate the show completely - yet - I've been quite happy to pay for streamlink. At the moment I'm seriously too skint to pay for it, so I have 'stolen' a few shows recently but mainly my attitude is that it's their product, they have a right to charge for it.

However, the older shows aren't available for sale, so fck em - I'll steal what I can where I can.
It's ridiculous that their archive only goes back 3 years - it must actually cost more money to remove them than it would to just leave em be.

Why don't they just stream ALL the old shows constantly? I'd pay for that.

Ever since Noory's lies became very blatant and provably false, see my long post above, I  rarely listen to him.  He had M. Kaku on a while back, one of my favorites, but I read his new book rather than listen to Noory make a fool out of himself.
My stream link expires in Jan. 2012.  I don't cancel it because I listen to 50% of Ian and 75% of Knapp.  Love podcasts while I'm on my treadmill.  Relieves the boredom.

Completely agree with you here. Even though it may be a bit of tribalism it is comfortable to know there are rational thinking people realizing how truly awful c2c has become.

Dishing dirt for reasons to raise oneself in a circle of friends is (imo) bad taste. But no one here is looking to gain a level in the pecking order. Most generally we just want intelligent late night entertainment. We don't need everything to be factual but we do want rational dialogue.
