OK.  The interesting thing turns out to be where do we draw the line between minding-your-own-business and behavior we need to control?  We all get that a sixteen year old can say whether she's being exploited or not, but why do we set the age of consent higher in this country?

Do we object only when it adversely affects all of us, like littering or air pollution?  In that case, we are saying that the ability to stop conceiving children, or killing them before they are born, allows us to stop protecting sixteen year olds from decisions they don't recognize could harm them later in life.   Does it matter?

China's ability to control reproductive choice on gender has resulted in their population choosing widely that a boy was more desirable than a girl.  This is causing huge problems in China AND Japan where large numbers of mateless teenage males travel in packs loitering in train stations and committing crimes.

See, now it gets interesting.  It certainly would benefit their societies if these rootless hormonal males did something to contribute to society.  Oh, I know, they could care for the burgeoning elderly population--scratch that, they have designed robots for that.  And robots for their sexual needs as well.  Any of this create a problem for you?  For China or Japan?

But sex, not so much as a double take unless one is a minor, AND a parent gives a shit. I have seen a 14 year old after just giving birth fending off her amorous boy friend of 20. With the parent in the room.

I completely agree there is a major disconnect between the legality of drinking and the age one can enlist in the military.

I see a few patients a year that are in marriages where one spouse is significantly older. And as one may suspect sometimes it is an issue and other times it isn't an issue at all. But the younger the youngest one is in a relationship has a direct correlation to their lack of equality in that relationship. In some respects it is similar to a parent/child relationship. A person of 50 even if lacking maturity has a wealth of life experience that is missing from one of 16. Instead of having conversations there would more likely be teaching lessons. I do not see that as a healthy plan for a long term relationship.

Totally agree with your statements. I'd even say it's now very hard to actually "protect" a child from sexual influences that are rife throughout our modern society. At every corner there are scantily clad girls and shirtless boys. Id say half of all commercials we see have some sort of sexual content, usually involving women. That includes radio and television. Even the movies have ads these days. And some parents don't seem to mind that a 6 year old is shaking her ass for the cameras. Some are even applauding it (toddlers and tiaras). That show seriously makes me want to vomit. I just feel so ashamed of those kids and very very angry at the parents who watch ( and thus fund ) and who participate in such things. You're making your daughter a sexual object, no matter if you try and deny or ignore it. At that age, that is disgusting to say the least. You're right about relationships in that the younger-older thing doesn't really work for half the people that try it. For the other half though, it does work, so why can't we let them be happy? It looks like controversial couple Doug Hutchison and Courtney Stodden are looking to join the ranks of Snooki, Speidi and the Kardashians - the two are reportedly working on a reality show.

According to E! News, the 17-year-old bride and her 51-year-old actor husband have a project in the works with Merv Griffin Entertainment and the company’s President of Television Roy Bank. (Bank is behind “Are You Smarter Than a Fifth Grader?”)

"We are so thrilled that we are in business with Merv Griffin Entertainment and Roy Bank," Doug and Courtney said in a statement. "[Bank] is a delightful man, and we know the show is going to be successful."


The couple hasn't started filming yet, although they do have a name for the show (they’re not sharing).

"It's going to show people what they can teach each other from different generations," Courtney's mom Krista Keller told E! News.

Keller, who signed off on the Vegas marriage when her daughter was 16, is also the couple’s manager.

"They're going to touch on family issues,” Keller continued. “There was a lot of judgment about their marriage from Doug's side of the family, so it will touch on bringing families back together and why it's important to support family members even if you don't agree."

In addition to family issues, the show will also address plastic surgery rumors and the cyber bullying Courtney says she’s been facing.

The family is certain this show will be a success. "Courtney is No. 1 in ratings for whatever she does," Keller said of her daughter.
