    Richard Hofstadter is rolling in his grave. Noory covers the "paranoid" and "anti-intellectual" angles with aplomb on a nightly basis. I've listened to about 45 seconds tonight and gave up.

I caught bits and pieces of tonight's show. Noory mentioned that he doesn't believe in the angry God of the OT. Yet, he let a fundy caller give a sermon. The guy gave the expected, obligatory talk on the Nephilim (sigh). Maybe Noory was just trying to be fair by letting the caller proselytize for a while. On the other hand, the Bible-thumpers and Scripture-quoters seem to predominate.  On the other other hand, two anti-establishment people made it on the air after the first guy. On the fourth hand, a literalist caller took the guest to task by talking about the Garden of Eden, as if that would change the guest's "heretical" beliefs.

I did recently listen because a few of the members here interacted in a specific thread. But the best choice is not to listen, ever.

      I give it a shot when Ian or Knapp there, and sometimes will hang around if the guest is decent. To your larger point, I tend to agree...the show just seems different now and not in a good way. Maybe it's me, but my enthusiasm for many of the C2C subjects has waned with time.

I don't even know why they still do UFO related things(songs, photos on the website, listener fan artwork etc) since they so rarely talk about that topic or any paranormal at all.

But what can you really expect from an uneducated and close-minded buffoon like Noory?  I imagine he likes to think he has an open mind because of the nutty topics they discuss on the show, but what it boils down to is an unwillingness, or more probably an inability, to really think about things and consider that educated people might have a good argument in many cases.  In this sense, he is as close-minded as any debunker.

It depends on the guest and/or the subject. You can listen around Noory if the guest can talk around Noory. That said, your advice definitely applies to the second half of Friday shows. That's one hole that doesn't have a bottom.

    They are the prime suspects. I actually still read a lot about what could be described as "C2C" subjects, but I've become nauseated by much of the electronic media.

   I'd rather watch a re-run of "In Search Of" from 1977 than the pablum served up today...

Its a shame whats become of Coast, I haven't listened to the show in about 2 or 3 weeks now.  I had to force myself to listen to the Whitley Strieber interview the other day, but it sounded very stale. George Knapp is a snoozer, anyone with the name of George as the host hasn't got anything to make the show interesting.

I can listen to Knapp and Punnett. I can't listen to Noory. The infomercial vibe, that you mentioned, is just the tip of the iceberg. Unfortunately, it can't sink the titanic ship of suck ("thar she blows") that he built.

In his world, you're a closed-minded debunker if you ask for a scintilla of evidence for the most outrageous claims. It's like how all of his critics must be "haters". There's no other explanation for it. There's something wrong with *you* if you don't accept and believe him and his guests, no matter what they do or say.

    Critical thinking seems to be reserved for Saturday nights. George doesn't have time for such endeavors, it would require paying attention and caring. Boring stuff like that.

I think that "In Search Of" was the best speculative TV show ever made. It likely couldn't be remade today. There would be too many bells and whistles in the new version. "Less is more" is alien (no pun) to most contemporary producers.

Like you, I like books and magazines more than most episodes of Coast when it comes to UFOs and all that fun stuff. Noory caused my paranormal chewing gum to lose its enjoyable flavor. His constant one-size-fits-all cliches made the subject seem about as spicy as oatmeal after a while. It almost seemed like a plot to turn off fans of the topic.

I almost missed your post. Yeah, I couldn't agree more! Noory seems to prefer shows, about the economy and political subjects, more than programs about the esoteric and paranormal topics. I can do without the alternative health segments too. Did this new direction contribute to Bell's permanent split from Coast?

    Amen all around. Noory has diluted the paranormal into a safe,neat little product. No edge, no bite. A Fate magazine from 1983 is more relevant today than Noory's C2C.

    As a kid who watched "In Search Of" religiously every weekend...I couldn't agree more. It's spartan production and direct approach would have no chance in 2011. I hate sounding like the "it was better then" crank...but it was. Fact,not opinion.

There are nights when that is literally true. Some episodes sound like rebroadcasts of shows from the 1970s. Gulf Breeze and Phoenix seem current by comparison.

Jethro, this just rang my bell.  If I thought Noory had the intelligence to formulate a plot of any kind, I would say this is exactly what he has done.
 
Noory has corrupted so many stories of things that go bump in the night that a lot of us are now wondering what ever made us think we gave a damn in the first place. Break enough dishes and after a while no one will ask you to wash dishes any more.

Scully, there's a good way to keep the flavor. Listen to reruns of Bell, and listen to new shows from Knapp and others. They have good vibes. Their presentations sound like conversations, not infomercials. Their takes on the paranormal and the alternative aren't formulaic. Their programs cleanse your "sound buds" to get the "bad taste" out of your ears. The other hosts' shows flow in a manner that highlights the disparities in ways that can't be denied. The Coast glass is half full when you look at it that way.
