Art Bell's FCC Stance
« on: June 23, 2008, 03:56:26 AM »
I've heard Art Bell call himself a Libertarian and he's a member of the LP, but one major disagreement I have with his politics is his stance on the FCC regulation of obscenities. On onee of the shows he talks about it, it airs on the UFOship reruns, and he says that he supports the regulations (at least partially) because obscenities don't contribute to the quality of discussion/etc.

However, in my mind, from a Libertarian perspective, that is irrelevant. Using four letter words every third word spoken doesn't make a contribution to discussion, but in a dramatic performance or a passionate outpouring there is simply nothing that can replace an 'obscenity.' You know this if you've ever watched a movie on television to find 'obscenities' bleeped-out or replaced with a milder form, and find the impact of the original dialogue is totally lost and downright stupid, something no one would ever say in real life in a given situation.

It comes down to a matter of Freedom of Speech. The First Amendment wasn't made to protect popular speech, but unpopular speech that people may disagree with, be it for political reasons or pseudo-ethical ones.

What say you?

I think they should be fined on a case by case basis. Accident=little fine, people doing it for shock value or ratings=big fine. For me, hearing someone slip and curse/swear/cuss/whatever on the radio doesn't bother me in the least, but telling people it's okay to curse like a sailor no matter who might be tuning in, I vote no. They already allow enough mild swear words so I think people can get their point across using those if they need to add emphasis.

What kind of fine would "Digital dolphin dildos, diddling disabled dirty d?butantes dutifully daily & disgracefully." elite?

It would seem you could say nearly any of those worlds on the radio, save one, perhaps. But the usage. He, call up Noory and ask him if that can be said on the radio.

$5,000 for Dildos, $2000 for diddling, and an A+ for extreme alliteration.

I think that the FCC sucks. Also if you want to do good radio you should not use freaking Terrestrial radio . I can't stand Terrestrial radio. It all sounds the same. Shit it don't matter where you go. It all sounds the same. I mean there may be some good radio left. I listen to mp3's or play my own shows.

I suggest Big O and Dukes. It's the only good show post-Stern/bell.

The way I look at it is, it depends on where the obscenities are coming from, how they're used, etc. For example:

Exhibit A: "What we may discover with the LHC could help us understand and account for important debated discrepancies in modern psychics. We could even learn more about the formation of our own universe. This is an absolute phenomenal opportunity and I personally believe it's worth a little fucking risk!"

Exhibit B: "Fuck dat booty, fuck dat booty ho, fuck dat booty, shit, money, shit, gold rims mothafucka, yeah"

So, in a way, I sort of pretty much agree with Σεληνόλυκος. Useless expletives in useless conversation only degenerates the listener even worse. Kids are fucking morons these days because they're listening to morons. However, allowing someone to add the occasional expletive in MEANINGFUL, INTELLECTUAL debate would very well serve to lighten the mood a little and probably provide much better, more genuine interviews. The listener isn't degenerated when the core conversation is truly intellectual simply because someone uses a "four-letter-word".

What should *REALLY* be abolished is 90% of media directed at tweens and teenagers.

...And I think I sound like my father now.

Sometimes advertising aimed at teens APPALLS me.  a few years ago - someone was marketing a soda-pop-sweet (I'm just assuming on the sweet, given the description and the market - I never had the stuff - YUCK!) wine cooler type drink with CAFFEINE in it.  What a fantastic idea!  Let the kiddies drink, and stay awake long enough to drink more and truly get f'ed up - maybe even kill themselves with it (as some have with jello shots -similar concept)

The radio spot featured an obviously YOUNG girl (that high-pitched teen girl sound) saying "I want mini-skirts, not mini-vans!  Don't give ME no settle-down life!"

Every time I heard that spot, I thought of one of Bill Hick's routines that starts  "If you are in marketing, kill yourself now.  That's not a joke. You are the tools of Satan and serve no usefull purpose"

While I don't think that applies to everyone in advertising, it sure as hell, in my mind, applies to whomever came up with that radio spot.

Thanks, I think so too. It's just always scary to hear myself thinking like my parents, I suppose.

My biggest issue with teen-directed advertising is that it's become riddled with poor english, recurring materialistic themes, sexualization of young women, ect. I think Buchanan was right. There's a culture war, and the traditionalist conservatives are losing. If the FCC should stand against anything, in my opinion, it should be advertising that embraces these behaviors directed towards tweens/teens that degenerates each generation into something that will eventually resemble Mike Judge's 'Idiocracy".
