For Dog Lovers (no poodles here ;-) )
« on: June 21, 2008, 10:42:15 AM »

A friend gave me a book called My Dog Tulip for my birthday.  It's a fun read.  I Googled it, and found this: http://www.tulipthedog.com  Anyone who knows and loves dogs should get a kick out of it, as well as anyone interested in animation.

elle oh elle... i love the way you manage to work in your subtle rib jabs over this whole poodle flap.  i must say, of all the items on that list, the poodle hatred got me the most grief.  i still love you, however.

>GRIN<  Oh dear, Michael - my previous jabs must have left you a bit tender.  This time - my intention was to ally any fear you may have you'd be exposed to more poodle-ness if you followed the link.

Did I ever tell you my OTHER dog is a beagle-pointer mix?  Here he is, his name is Barkley:

i have a fondness for beagles.  my parents have had a couple over the years, and they still have one today.  she's a sweet dog.  the catch with beagles, however, is that when they get outside and their nose catches something, they completely disregard the fact that you exist and their cerebral functions are guided ENTIRELY by olfaction.

imo, the greatest dog EVER is the labrador, particularly the yellow labrador.   here is a picture of my beloved dog, bonzo.  second only to my wife, she is my best friend.

Yes indeed - beagles DO follow their noses - I've heard many a beagle lover say they "Have their own agenda." A reputable electric fence company will tell you NOT to use one scent hounds, beagles in particular, since, on on the scent, they will run right through it, zap or no zap!

I like a well-bred lab, but, like many dogs that have become popular, they're too often over-bred. (the same is true of poodles, particularly the smaller ones, and no, that's not a jab, just a statement of fact.) It sounds like you have one of the good labs. 20 years ago - Labs and goldens were considered the top family dogs.  Now, many of the inbred fools will bite kids who have food in their hands, NOT because they are mean, but because they don't notice the hand!  (DUH-OH!)

Anyway - with any dog - KNOW YOUR BREEDER - meet the dam, and the sire if you can, and get references.

Rescue dogs are another story - Barkley was one and I had to pay a Puppy-Shrink $80 an hour to help me train him out of his insanity.

Your girl is a pretty one.

I used to volunteer at a dog shelter a few years back and helped a friend do animal rescue. I fostered rescues in transition and maintained the website while she met with prospective families, did the interview, took the dogs to the vet, etc.

I myself have adopted some of the non-adoptable rescues and a few babies from the shelter. I am down to 6 dogs - four chihuahuas, a Lhasa Apso and a miniature poodle (7 pounds).

If he's only 7# - he's a toy, not a mini (unless he's AWFULLY underweight!)

In the US - what determines size class is height at the shoulder.

> 15 inches = STANDARD (mine is a standard - but he's more than 10 inches over that divide)

< 15 inches but >10 inches = MINI (still a good sized dog)

< 10 inches = TOY (my cat would eat him)

There ARE unofficial sizes that are simply descriptive - but not recognized by any American Kennel Club - or rather, they're called by one of the above names.  (ie: Royal = Standard Tiny Toy = Toy)

Royals > 27 inches  (BIG suckers - mine comes close but not quite)

Teacup or Tiny Toy - so absurdly small they can't give birth - and have to have c-sections. I've met some as small as 3 pounds.  They scare me. I'm sure I'd step on it.

It's a she, and she is really overweight. She's fixed, so I know that she's not prego. Also, all my males are fixed, so they couldn't get her pregnant anyway. She was thin/normal when she was younger. She's going on 12 years old now, and has turned into a little butterball. She looks like a little lamb.

Sounds like what you have is a "tiny toy" -- She sounds cute.
