i think if we had ended the embargo against cuba early on, communism in cuba would have effectively dried up five years later. it's been one of the biggest foreign policy blunders in our history, and unfortunately, any politician who proposes ending the embargo is accused of being un-american or some such nonsense. bleh. i guess we thought the embargo would encourage the people of cuba to rise up against their government, but after 50 years of failure, you'd think we'd see a pattern.
for an example of what happens to communist regimes when you engage them in commerce, take a look at china. while their government remains oppressive and totalitarian in plenty of ways, they've made significant strides toward democracy in recent years. these democratic advances were the result of our decision to trade with them. why would cuba be different? it seems the american continuation of the embargo simply comes down to an attempt at saving face.
if we'd ended the embargo against cuba decades ago, they'd probably be one of the USA's most reliable allies in the western hemisphere today. the casto regime would probably have fallen long ago. cuba would have become a paradise, and its people would have enjoyed a quality of life far beyond what they've been subjected to for fifty years. it's just a shame that the policy never changed because of the fear politicians had of the electoral consequences.
end the cuban embargo.
