Best Open Line Call You've Heard?
« on: September 25, 2010, 06:56:56 PM »
It's REALLY hard to do it with George, but with Art, open lines was so much of a treat - you really never knew what you were going to get.

Snoory on the other hand... boring caller, after boring caller. He wasn't always as bad as he is now (or maybe I was just giving him SUPER benefit of the doubt, but w/e)

Noticing the other thread on "Callers We Hate," what are some of your most memorable open line calls?

I remember Art had a call from a guy who claimed that he had "Famous people toenail clippings." He got Madonnas on a beach in malibu, and had them individually tagged for the "stars," and how he had a "toenail dealer" LMAO ;D

I remember George once had a call from a lady who said she picked up the uni bomber - luckily she did most of the talking...

The guy who was flying his little airplane into area 51 was awesome.  Remember that one?  Probably a hoax but was great.  You could hear the fighter jets flying past him and air raid sirens in the background, and he's going "This probably wasn't a good idea."

it's my understanding that the copy of this call we always end up hearing has been edited for whatever reason.  is that correct?

I think I've wrote this before, but I seriously love open lines.  My favorite callers are the ones that start out sounding like a normal person with a story and then it quickly deteriorates into lunacy.  The process of them starting out on the right foot and then falling apart fascinates me.

Friday night, Snoory was letting them go on for ten minutes at a time. Maybe he ate some bad chicken parm and needed some bathroom breaks.

Genrally I hate open lines.  The callers overall were better in the Bell era, and he was better at sheapherding calls in various directions, depending on the caller.  George's callers just seem tamer and uniteresting generally, however I do like it when George messes with his callers on Friday nights.

I'm convinced that many of them are also taking plenty of hard meds.

That's what i miss most about open lines nowadays... It just seems like George is REALLY uninterested with OL's nowadays.

Classic example of an Art Bell OL call

It sounds wacked, but it's true.

In the back of my mind, when i heard this call, there was a little part that said "this guy MUST've seen it wrong, maybe it was something on old medical oddities in the past or something, or maybe he somehow misinterpreted what was on TV."

EvB, thank you, that link was great.

If each of the 2 heads fell in love and wanted to marry a different guy, was it bigamy? Or wife-sharing?

3 lungs. Kinda awesome.

Has anyone else heard the call where the woman claims to have worked at China Lake, and claimed to have worked with a geneticist that work with the infamous alien "J-Rod?"

I remember actually listening to this call live when it happened I think either 2004 or 2005, saying to myself "wow this is some crazy shit," as a matter of fact it freaked out the girlfriend I was with at the time, I had to listen to the end with headphones if I recall properly, she did not want to hear it LOL

I was incredibly happy found the show on mp3, I think the title was "Amazing OL" I have to check my archives...

For those who haven't heard:

i don't think it would be considered bigamy since there's only one vag.

When Art had the show in the mid to late '90's, there was a woman who would call in at least once or twice a week (or as often as she could get through), who would flirt with him mercilessly, and he would even flirt right back.  Can't remember her name, but I always enjoyed their banter.

Anyone else recall hearing her - or her name?

I totally remember that.  Cool.  Noory played it on his program at least once.  (I never listened to Art Bell.)

Now that you mention it, yes, I remember her. Name totally escapes me. Mid-to-late 90s-ish.

I've mentioned this in other threads, but the nature of open lines has changed since Art left. Noory rarely has truckers on anymore, and I can't recall the last time he's had a policeman on. One could guess it's because they're not getting past the call screener, but I have to wonder if they're even bothering to call in. Truckers, policeman and night owls used to be the core audience.

Fave OL call -- definitely Area 51 caller. That was good radio.

Either the Area 51 pilot or the Area 51 caller. Both were brilliant but I don't know if the pilot was fake or not.
