Do you REALLY want it? I can have it up for you later tonight...
The ability, more than the actual movie ;D

               Thanks, anyway!

Users have 30 minutes to edit a post. Should this be extended? Is it the right amount of time? Or maybe it's too much time? Opinions, please.

I am in favor of 24 hours to edit a post.  Here's why:

1.  After the editing period, it is permanent.
2.  Twenty-four hours would give plenty of time for the poster to revise the post in response to serious objections from the rest of us, or as simply a matter of conscience.
3.  Do you know how many times I have seen you or EvB revise or eliminate a post?  Too many times.  More time for self-revision (reflection) might cut back on the time you have to waste on interventions.
4.  I see no logical reason to make self-editing time short.  A lot of dumb shit is written at night and I assume some people wished they could change their post in the morning.

I like the way MVD has it configured now. To allow users 24 hours to modify posts is almost historical revision. If someone says something horrible or whatever ... this way there's no backtracking

You have a well thought out point, but consider this:  in the "real world" you have the option to expunge what you have said by several ways of communicating your change of mind and heart.  Twenty-four hours leaves plenty of room to factor in natural human foibles.  I, for one, have more respect for those who revise their posts after well considered reflection.  Shows good character.  Why would that bother anyone else?

30 minutes is fine. I generally stand by the nonsensical shit that I spout...until I change my mind. But I like to see my inconsistencies or regression/progression laid bare.
I still have notebooks from when I was in high school(circa 1991) and keep them as a testamentary proving that 15 year olds opinions are absolutely worthless and that I should have been murdered for some of them.

can't argue with this, but if I am not mistaken, MV used to have the editing period set much longer than 30 minutes (GNS), and it did provide a sense of latitude with one's ability to own up to much needed revision.  I've blabbered enough. :-X

EXCEPTIONALLY well said. I may be repeating myself on this issue, but I belong to a number of computer forums for which there is no time limit on editing - I can still edit 7 years later. I am in favor of long, if not very long edit times; I'll enumerate a few but not all (to spare members' boredom):

1. allows me to correct spelling/grammar - I hate being wrong.
2. allows me to reflect on what I may have said in a way which is unbecoming (when undeserved ;) )
3. on rare occasions, Milwaukee's Best (hey, it has the cheapest alcohol volume:price ratio!) has spoken for me
4. I can correct download links without having to repost them or bother an admin
5. I just don't buy into the notion that an edited post somehow "disrupts" the content or flow of a thread - people are smart enough to read past anomalies.

So while I know the "no-time-limit" rule will likely not take place here (though I wish it would), allowing at least 24 hours would help us all to reconsider what we may have typed.

I'll close by reiterating M. Knight's simple yet eloquent quote above.

Hell, upon further reflection, I may have even taken pity on Fort Rock.

edit: Naaaaaaaaaaaawwwwww...

30 minutes is ample.  If you can't get a post right in 30 minutes, you don't belong on a forum.  24 hours is too much time, the post could be behind numerous retorts, and editing would destroy the entire flow of the conversation.  Besides, people always have the option of quoting their own post and adding amendments or edits later.  I think anything more than 30 minutes could potentially just be abused.

I really don't think people re-consider their views so easily... or so fast.  I think most people will edit their posts just to get rid of embarrassing spelling or grammar errors.  Maybe occasionally to make their views clearer.

I'm dyslexic so I have to proofread things many times to catch errors.  Plus it takes me a long time to type -- 30 minutes is nothing!   It totally bugs me when I catch an error and I can't correct it.

Also, it is much easier to see mistakes when you look at your post after some sleep.   :P

Ha, I could read that as fast as if it had been written normally!  Except for "elohssa" that took a few seconds.  My mind is just too pure, I suppose.   ::)   (And I thought you randomly scrabbled the letters instead of just writting everything backwards.)

Actually when I was in grade school, even though I was in the second slowest reading group (the slowest being for kids who could not read period) no one teased me because I could read things upside down or in a mirror just as well as standard printing.  They thought that this was cool.  If I was only younger, I would have gotten extra time on my SAT, etc.  But that wasn't done back then.  Still did okay though.

I always wondered about that, was it like reading from a mirror? My best friend in first grade was, I remember seeing him write" nairb" on his papers and it astonished me. This was 1981, and a Catholic school, they kept him back and outside of Title I, they didn't address his issues at all. I thought my son was, when he was younger he wrote things in a cramped style, not backward, but pressed together.

If someone decides they need to change their posts they can quote themselves (see how self important they are?) and then post their updates

Obama has really established an adversarial relationship with states and the judicial system.

How is Obama's statement more severe than the Republicans' attacks on "activist judges" in the Supreme Court on and off for the past ten years? And they partly brought it on themselves by sounding like they're speaking at the Republican National Convention every time they make a statement. They've even complained about things that aren't even in the law, seemingly getting their information from comments in blog posts.

In this case the Judges are simply assessing constitutionality and not potentially bypassing the legislative process by making law as some "activist judges" have been accused of in the past.  Obama's statements reach a level of precedent because he challenged their right to assess the constitutionality of a law.  Can you imagine what the Press would do if one day the Supreme Court challenged the executive authority of the President?

The "We Are The 99%" campaign is growing more annoying by the day. There enough billionaires,centimillionaires,decamilliionaires,multi-millionaires and millionaires in this country that they exceed 1%.

This narrow "1%" is flawed because it means people making 250K annually are to supposed to be simpatico with those making 25K? Yeah, lot of unity there. Lots of common cause between someone making 20 grand and someone making 150 grand.

          Hippies suck at sloganeering.

Hippies are some of the most prejudice hateful perrier-drinking FAKERS I've ever had the displeasure of buying drugs from.

Don't get me started on the whole "hippier than thou" 99% "I'm not bathing anymore and living in a rape-camp now" bullshit.

Why yes, reading in a mirror is like reading in a mirror!  But seriously, I do not think I SEE things any differently from anyone else.  My brain just puts a different emphasis on things.  My brain is hard-wired to think relative positions in space are unimportant.  Thus, d, p. q, and b can all easily be mistaken for each other by me because really they ARE all the same; they just have different orientations in space.  Intellectually, I know it is important to be able to tell one from another, but subconsciously my brain is still saying that the differences are minor and unimportant.

It is also hard for me to tell the difference between “country” and “county” etc. because my brain registers them as being almost the same.  I tend to process the whole page of text as a unit and have to consciously concentrate on individual letters, words, and sentences.  Although again, I am sure the page looks the same to me as to you.

This may be vaguely like if we both saw an attractive female.  I might be looking at what sort of handbag she has, while you might be looking at some body part.  We see the same thing, but our brains react differently.

Like many dyslexics I am pretty good at art and do great on those tests where you imagine various objects rotated in different ways.  I did well in school by avoiding classes that involved writing and taking classes that involved thinking: math and science as opposed to English and literature.  This had the additional benefit of allowing me to avoid a lot of PC nonsense which I hated and which was present in the schools even back then.

That's interesting, because I'm a speed reader who remembers everything...but I'm atrocious at art and suck at spatial tests. My SAT scores look like two people took them, the verbal portion was a genius and the math was a mongoloid. So I'm the polar opposite, it was all reading/writing courses for me. Though the PC strain in those types of classes(sociology/civics) can be a nightmare...

Does anyone else get unnerved by Obama's verbal attacks on the Supreme Court?  It is the kind of shit you see in Russia.

Yes.

The grandiose audacity is remarkable, unbelievable, and disheartening. One imagines a collective subterranean response, founding father bone marionettes (in somewhat Masonic-styled marionette coffins) spinning at unimaginable speeds, powdered wigs flying, knocking about like shuddering libertarian Wankel engines.

The bone against wood sound of repeated impact is not a scream for help, but a warning.

knock knock knock
knock knock knock
knock knock knock

The President: "What's that knocking sound? Locate that sound and shut it down immediately. Send in the S.E.A.L.S. if that's what it takes."

(pause)

"Since the S.E.A.L.S. are now my bitches."

To quote a well used line from the Dark Tower series, which I like and don't give a fuck if anyone else does or not....

The S.E.A.L.S. have forgotten the face of their father(s).
