With Art Bell seemingly done broadcasting, unless he answers the call of millions and returns, I pose this question: When Carson left we never had another one.. will Art Bell be a once in a  million broadcaster with no one ever to follow that will be quite like him?

I'd sure like to understand PremRat's thought process for "well, we can never replace Art Bell so let's try to find the dumbest, laziest, least interested dishonest shill we can find to replace him.  And, oh yeah, it would help if he is beyond boring and has no interview skills whatsoever, someone to keep for years no matter how much everyone complains".

I just don't get it.

Hi everybody, I have to get something off my chest. Long time Art Bell fan but it's only been recently I've been able to go through a lot of his shows. One thing I've noticed having listened to between 200 and 400 total hours of recorded shows is MAN, Art Bell is dumb. If you have even one Iota of intellectual capacity he just seem to possess this dense, ignorant personality and a very very very very mediocre level of intelligence. Another thing that bugs me is that he is VERY emotionally wishy - washy. He's the kind of man who gets knocked over by an overly strong gust of breeze.

I know, I know, then why listen to him? Well for two reasons: first I think this is actually to the shows favour, simply because he is such a wishy-washy, selfish, weak soul with mediocre (at best) intelligence he's the perfect guy to host a show like coast to coast. He listens and gets carried away by the story; this allows the various interviewees to just get into the zone and speak their mind. His vulnerability is disarming. Second, I noticed that this vulnerability causes the various interviewees to open up and expound. This allows the ones that are BS (or bad liars) to trip over themselves and expose things. Since I'm more of a skeptical person, to me it's kind of a litmus test. So while I find many of the episodes that I listen to are so annoying it makes my head feel like it's gonna explode; other times listening to Art is very rewarding precisely because no one else can draw people out on paranormal subject matter the way he can.

Anyway, I was wondering how many of you feel the same. Can't say I like Art as a man, but I like his work and he was a unique person in his own place and time.

So do you like Art or hate him?  It's a little hard to tell.  I don't think Art actually *was* dumb; he just played that way in order to disarm the guest, build rapport, and get them comfortable enough to open up, then he'd keep them on a fairly tight leash once he had established good will with them.

Art cared less about "truth and accuracy" and more about whether a show was entertaining.  the guy wasn't a journalist.  he rarely called bullshit on anyone that i can recall

Truth and accuracy. The only thing Noory is giving straight is the hind-end of Hoagland. UFO Phil is a credible source about the same. They both sorta talk alike  ???

Art Bell:
Quote
I've got to admit: I think that I'm pretty much an Obama supporter. I have watched him carefully, I've listened to his speeches, I've watched the sparks fly... and... I think, I'm an Obama guy!
(delivered in the typical self-overvaluing Art nasal-voice)

Does or did Art Bell EVER admit that he was DEAD WRONG on a subject matter?

Happy New Year to all.  I found an old picture of Art form New Year 2000 that I hope is showing in my avatar.  Art was clowning about being the Millennium Master with 2000 dawning and all the Y2K stuff predicted to happen.  Enjoy this look back to brighter times with C2C.

I read some of the negative comments about Art Bell and had to register. First, I had to laugh at the person who listened to Art 200-400 times before he made an opinion. That's quite a range. Was it 200 or 400? Anyway, I simply have this to say: I used to love C2C when Art was a part of it. Now I can't stomach it. I've tried to listen from time-to-time (but not 200-400 times) and I just can't listen anymore. It would be great if Art would come back with a new show in just an hour or two format a few days a week. I'd even enjoy a few times per month. But C2C now? Whoever wants it can have it.  :o

I don't agree with all Art Bell said, but he was at least talking and debating with his guests, unlike Noory, where everything is scripted and sterile and never challenging a guest sucks. At least George Knapp is capable and willing to provide more interesting debates.

What are your favorite Art sayings?

Validating a guest he would respond with, "Oh....oh...."

"Red eyes always bother me"

"I do not like dark closets"

others???? what do you recall????

there was a show where some lady was blabbing on and on about dreams and sleep. for some reason the subject of erotic dreams came up. shortly after that Art made a remark about dreaming of Alicia Silverstone. the time of the original broadcast would have probably been late 90's early 00's. meaning a very you Alicia Silverstone. and Art. and his ... ummmm ... nevermind

Not so much a saying, just the tone in his voice when the guest's just said something that's connected up with something Art was thinking about. This happens with Ian as well. I imagine it happens to Knapp also but as much as I like the guy his voice never seems to change.

Hopefully it was a time travel dream, into the future where she resembles the present-day Angela Lansbury...

Ah yes!!! The tone in his voice and how he used his voice to convey emotions of worry or uneasiness and it brought the stories to life as he would host the "Ghost to Ghost"
Another saying, "That brought the chills up my spine"

Art got that from the movie "Young Frankenstein" where Igor substituted a jar labeled "Abnormal" containing a disembodied human brain that was put into the frankenstein monster.
Igor thought the brain came from someone named "Abby Normal"  ;D

Aha! Thanks Morgus, there was a time when he kept saying it over and over and remarked that he liked that word... and then that laugh, actually there were several types of Art laughs, depending on the situation.
Miss that Art Bell... the Edgar Allen Poe of the air waves!

That drawn out 'ohhhhhhh?', when a guest would say something astonishing.  The more astonishing and unexpected, the longer he would draw it out.

'Go on' if a guest hesitated, but was doing fine.

'Caller, do you have a question?'

Too bad George Noory never discovered these interviewing tools.

"Let's take a look-see"

I realized something the other night when I heard the sign off INCA DANCE song .. Noory was just finished his American Idol Elvis rendition.. I was almost vomiting. The INCA DANCE started to play as he signed off.. and i thought about how much I loved hearing the Inca Dance. I'm on the East Coast, so when ARt Bell signed off or let a caller do it it was 5am ... and the Inca Dance would often be the last song I heard before i went to sleep for two hours before I went to work.

Art Bell was worth missing sleep.. worth being tired at work or school.. worth all of it.
Now I find myself going to be and waking up just in time to hear the inca dance.
How life changes....

loved that Art Bell expression too...
and, there was a time when he LOVED Crystal Gayle and he would tell the story of her coming to his studio and how she had recorded "Midnight in the Desert" for him...and that was the final song played at the end, back in the day, when it was Art Bell's C2C show.
Midnight in the Desert

lol, those are great examples, and I got a kick out Art at times--- it was unscreened emotion as well as the unscreened callers....
keep them coming Scruff and all....

I found the following message (see attached mp3) to be be extremely prescient and informative - perhaps a clue that even 9 years ago, when Art recorded this message, he knew that the "One-neuron Nooron" was not the correct choice. You be the judge.

NOTE: This was part of a longer recording - I edited it for brevity and relevance.

Enjoy

Thanks for the MP3.  It was so good to hear Art's voice.  He was so clear about his goal.  Art from the heart. Love that guy.

Well, that certainly wasn't a ringing endorsement... There were actually days back then when I thought George wasn't so bad... I tune in for a few minutes every week and it's usually the most awkward thing I hear for days - you know, the guests perplexed and flummoxed over his inane, rhetorical "questions".   Why do I still tune in at all anymore?  Why do any of us?
